Day 359 (June 27th, 2011)
Title: On The Edge
I wonder, when a bird looks over the edge, do they think: "Wow, that's a lot way down. Hope I don't trip or anything. Oh, wait, I can fly! Ha!"
Probably not.
Enjoy!

Photo 365 - Day 356 (Wrong God)
Day 356 (June 24th, 2011)
Title: Wrong God
Sorry for the bit of a blurry shot (although I think you can see the main focus of the photo), the old man "guarding" the booth wasn't happy that I was taking pictures. I'm sure he'd be less happy if he knew what I was going to do with them.
I remember remarking, "What God do you pray too?" when leaving the booth. I'm going straight to hell, but at least I'm going with good credit!
Enjoy!

Day 333 (June 1st, 2011)
Title: Triple Lame
We were passing a giant semi-truck and I noticed that the driver had put a bicycle behind the cab and Theresa said; "Hey, that's cool. That way he can get some exercise while he's not driving." I, on the other hand, said: "Wow, most folks would just call AAA if their truck breaks and get a tow-truck, this man uses a bike... I think he needs to get paid more. Or perhaps try-out for 'World Strongest Man' competition."
I'm always amazed I don't get smacked more often when I make comments like that... (and no, that is not an invitation!)
Enjoy!

Title: Church Attire
Like the shot glasses that I never really see anyone buy, every shop seems to have these t-shirts hanging in the window/awning. Who buy's these things!? I mean, other than frat parties, exactly what social occasion would these be appropriate to wear?

Day 306 (May 5th, 2011)
Title: FasTrak
Honestly, I'm not even sure that I really like this particular shot, but for some reason it really amuses me. When I look at it, it reminds me of the FasTrak lanes on the Bay Bridge heading into San Francisco. I guess that's amusing, because they are not fast, nor are they particularly "on track" (you have to swerve between many lanes to get into/out of the correct lanes). So, yeah, my 'abstract joke' via photographic medium.

Title: Tow Away Zone
"Hey! I was only parked here for like 15 min!"
"I'm sorry sir, this is a white zone, it's for loading and unloading of passengers only."
"I was totally doing that! Unloading them!"
"Of course you were sir. For 15 min? I don't think so. Your vehicle is going to be towed and you can claim it at impound."
"Seriously?! I mean, come on! I've got to be in Boston in like 6 hours!"
"That's not my problem sir."
"It won't even fit in your impound!"
"We'll make it fit sir. Now please stand aside. Thank you, and have a nice day."
"You *#@*!!"
At least, that's what I imagined they were saying to each other...
Still in catch-up mode.

Photo 365 - Day 238 (Imperial Fail)
Day 238 (February 26th, 2011)
Title: Imperial Fail
Sometimes when I take a shot and I try and think of a short little "story" to go with it, I just get stumped on what to write - either because I just can't think of anything, or (as in this case), there are just too many things I could write about this. I think I'll just leave it to the viewers to imagine the story that goes with this photo, only because I think others might have a more active imagination than I and could really think up some funny stuff.
Technical bits: Due to the urgency in trying to capture this photo, it came out much blurrier than I was wanting, but because of its humor level, I decided to use it anyway. It was shot using my 50mm prime at: f/2.0, 1/80th (ISO 400), with no flash.
Enjoy!

Photo 365 - Day 237 (Imperial Snacks)
Day 237 (February 25th, 2011)
Title: Imperial Snacks
Anytime you attend a comic book/sci-fi convention, there are a few little "tidbits" you should know. First, many folks like to dress in costumes. Sometimes those costumes are really well made and look like they were pulled right out of the show/book they are depicting. Other times, the costumes are more of the "home-brew" variety, not that I'm saying they are bad, but they clearly had to use some "alternate" materials when making the outfit (re: duct tape). Then you have the, well, lets just put it nicely; a drunken brain-damaged tree sloth could have made a better costume. Its also a generally accepted rule, if you wear a costume, be prepared for us folks with a camera to ask to take a picture of you. Most folks are cool with this, as long as you ask nicely and don't sound/act like a stalker or that guy from Silence of the Lambs.
The other important item about con's and costumes is, the most popular costume BY FAR is Imperial Stormtrooper from Star Wars. If you don't know what a stormtrooper is, I pity you. One of the more "fun" things to do at a con, is catch stormtroopers in interesting situations. For this shot, I have no idea what was being said, but I can only imagine:
"Lord Vader will have TWO Chili Dogs and they will be great - otherwise your planet is toast!"
"But we are out of chili!!"
"Oh, just try and tell the Emperor that!"
Enjoy!

In Greek mythology, Atlas was tasked (punished) to hold all of the heavens for all time. That myth has been symbolized by Atlas holding the Earth on his shoulders. Photo 365 - Day 230 (Tiger Bike)
Day 230 (February 18th, 2011)
Title: Tiger Bike
Riding the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit - basically the subway system/light rail for the San Francisco Bay Area), you meet a lot of interesting folks - some you wish you hadn't ever met, some you wish you could have chatted more with, and some who might not even be native residents of this planet. Happily, the gentleman I met while waiting to get to downtown SF was of the middle group - I was enjoying a lovely chat, which was tragically shortened by my train arriving. At first, I saw his bike, which is certainly an attention-getter (see the photo), and so I decided to walk up and ask him if I could shoot a few shots of it. He smiled and said yes and while getting some close-ups of the tail and handlebars, we started chatting about photography. I also loved that the warning cone was his - which is important, because it IS a tiger bike after all!
So, the next time you see something a bit wacky (like a tiger bike), walk up and ask about it, you never know what sort of conversation might ensue.
Technical bits: I was using my widest angle lens for this shot (18-55mm) at 18mm. I had to use the on-board flash (I think it would have come out a lot better if I could have used a flashgun or other more powerful source). The settings were: f/4.0 at 1/60th (ISO 400). For "next time", I think a lower angle (perhaps being at his eye-level) would have made the shot more friendly/inviting.
Enjoy!

Day 227 (February 15th, 2011)
Title: Indiana Bird
Finishing my "trifecta" of bird photos, I have for you, Indiana Bird! I was watching this bird walk carefully from one paver (paving stone) to the next, with a very dedicated/intense look on his beak. Of course, the first thing that I think of (and who wouldn't) was the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Specifically, the part in which Indiana has to walk on the stones, "In the Name of God" and missteps and nearly falls like 3,000 stories to his dooooom! This pigeon had that same look. I'm not sure if the bird was after the Holy Grail, but I'm more inclined to think he was looking for the Holy Breadcrumb.
Enjoy!

This is a follow-up to yesterday's "Punk Bird" shot. When I saw this photo, I immediately pictured in my mind, this is what "Punk Bird" looks like when their dad shows up. I can imagine the conversation:
"Coo! Boy, what are you doing standing on one leg?!"
"Sorry sir, coo."
"And what's with that silly hair?! Do you want to look like you just flew into a window?! Coo!"
"Sorry sir, coo."
"And stop squinting! You've got eyes, open them! Coo!"

Day 225 (February 13th, 2011)
Title: Punk Bird
Lately, whenever we go to the local mall, there are always (as old folks say) "Punk Kids" hanging out. They are just sitting around, trying to look cool (course, just hanging out at a mall all day, at least to me, automatically reduces your cool level to zero), having an attitude that only a 15-year-old who gets a $50.00 a week allowance and has their parents pick them up when it time to go home, can have. They also have these remarkably silly haircuts ("faux-hawks" and the like) - not that I'm giving them any flack for that, I know when I was a kid, I had some epically silly haircuts. But, I find is slightly amusing that they are all trying to express their individually and anti-establishment they are - but they all have the same $45 haircut that more than likely they got at a "stylist" (rather than a barber, like I used to back in the "good ol' days"). I'm sure, in 30 years, they'll be at the mall, see a group of "Punk Kids" with their silly Bowl Cuts (it's a look that could come back! You don't know!) and say: "Man, thank goodness I was never like that when I was a kid!"
The more things change, the more they stay the same!...
Of course, this photo ties in with the story only because when I saw the bird, I couldn't help thinking: "I wonder if other animals in nature have the same problems..." Here was this pigeon, standing on a rail with only one foot ("Punk Birds" always got to be doing something different), with a "avant garde" hair-do (at least, for pigeon's it is), just hanging out at the mall. I wonder what he say's to his friends when they show up: "Sup, coo. Coo. Yo." ... Probably not.
Enjoy!

Continuing with yesterday's shot of the yarn flowers that our friend made for us, today's shot is actually identifiable as both yarn and a flower! This particular flower was about 1 to 1.5 inches wide and was very tightly woven (some of the other ones were a bit looser, giving the center a nifty hole and adding a bit of a pattern to the "petals").

Photo 365 - Day 220 (Yarn Tunnel)
Day 220 (February 8th, 2011)
Title: Yarn Tunnel
A friend of ours came over last week and while we were all sitting around chatting, she decided that she needed to scrap (that happens a lot when folks come over to our house - its basically a scrapbook store, but with more alcohol and better snacks). She decided to just make some cool flowers out of yarn and scrap fabric. I was thoroughly impressed, because a) they looked really neat and b) I end up in the emergency room requiring 230 stitches and needing 6 quarts of blood after just trying to thread the needle.
I've taken a few shots of the flowers, and this one is the first. Of course, being that I'm taking these pictures, the first one has to be an abstract that looks nothing like a flower, nor anything else really. I called it "Yarn Tunnel", because when I saw it, I joked: "Hey, this is the 'Tunnel of Light' that scrappers see when they die!"
And as it says in the Book of Tim (Holtz, that is), Psalm 11:24, "And lo, when thy scrap has end, thou shall see a great scrapping light, and a tunnel of perfectly spun yarn, and thou shalt KNOW thy is in a good place. A place of everlasting glue-pens and correctly shaped punches."
Enjoy!
