In Greek mythology, Atlas was tasked (punished) to hold all of the heavens for all time.  That myth has been symbolized by Atlas holding the Earth on his shoulders.  I saw this statue, and the first thing I thought was: "Well, there's your problem - if they had gotten a robot to do it, it would have been done in a snap!"

Photo 365 - Day 192 (Greek Groove)

Title: Greek Groove

I love the Greeks, and not just because they created democracy, philosophy, literature, and like a million scientific and mathematical concepts.  I mean, its great that they did all those things too, but what I really love are the Greek Festivals!  If you have never had the pleasure of going to a Greek festival, I highly recommend it.  I mean, how can you go wrong when you have foods like: Dolmadakia, Spanakopita, and Baklava (just to name a few)!  Just imagine how many points you'd get for spelling one of those in Scrabble! 

Another great part of a Greek festival is the dancing!  Everyone dances in giant twisting circles - just grab someones hand, and your pulled right in to get your groove on!  One of the accessories (not required mind you) when dancing are colorful scarves decorated with coins (or metal discs) so they "jingle" when the groove hits! 

So, the next time you have a chance, get out there and visit a Greek festival and get your groove on!  Great food, great music, and great people!

Photo 365 - Day 110 (Halloween Faces)

We had a great "pre-Halloween" dinner last week and we went out to a really fun place in Oakland called The Fat Lady.  It's a nice restaurant/bar in Jack London Square (right next to the parking garage - so easy to get to).  Now, normally a restaurant/bar wouldn't be something to really get excited about, but the one thing that The Fat Lady does that is really cool is they LOVE decorating for Halloween.  Every year they do something completely different - and they REALLY get into it.  This year they did a great "Greek Tales" motif, including cyclops, minotaurs, Greek gods, and all kinds of other fun (and spooky) stuff!  The only problem (at least in a photogenic sense) was that the place was really dark (added a lot to the atmosphere tho)!  I tried to get a much out of my 1.4 lens as I could, but the shots are still a bit "off".  I really didn't want to use the flash because the place was packed and I thought blinding other patrons might not be the best idea. Course, as soon as I saw others taking pictures using flash, I immediately regretted bringing mine.  Still, I think the shots came out okay.
