Photo 365 - Day 312 (Uphill Walk)

Day 312 (May 11th, 2011)
Title: Uphill Walk

A little break from the shapes fun, now we turn our attention to some fun in San Francisco!

Subject: Bay Bridge, slightly askew.

Enjoy!

Photo 365 - Day 306 (FasTrak)

Day 306 (May 5th, 2011)
Title: FasTrak

Honestly, I'm not even sure that I really like this particular shot, but for some reason it really amuses me.  When I look at it, it reminds me of the FasTrak lanes on the Bay Bridge heading into San Francisco.  I guess that's amusing, because they are not fast, nor are they particularly "on track" (you have to swerve between many lanes to get into/out of the correct lanes).  So, yeah, my 'abstract joke' via photographic medium.

Subject: Even more cubes, although smaller, with dots.

Enjoy!

Photo 365 - Day 228 (Bridge Gap)

Day 228 (February 16th, 2011)
Title: Bridge Gap

I recently saw a great photo in a mall (crazy!).  It was a large print on the wall of Bloomingdale's of the Golden Gate bridge, done in black and white from the perspective of someone driving in a car (I'm hoping the passenger took the photo, not the driver!)  It was shot straight up so you could really see the towers as well as the cars zipping along the bridge.

I thought I'd try to replicate that photo somewhat, but via the Bay Bridge (only because we rarely go over the Golden Gate).   I got a few shots that were okay, but didn't quite get the look I was going for (too much traffic and we were going a bit too fast for the camera to focus the way I wanted it to).  This photo, on the other hand was more of a "playing around" shot, but I really enjoy how it came out.  To pay homage to the original idea of what I was working on, I did some selective coloring to render the top and bottom black and white.  The bridge in the background is in fact, the Golden Gate!

Enjoy

Photo 365 - Day 68 (City By The Bay (Bridge))

Day 68 (September 10th, 2010)
Title: City By The Bay (Bridge)

Another night shot of the Bay Bridge and San Francisco.   I did nearly kill a security guard to get this picture, to whom I would like to apologize.  Sorry for taking 5 years off, but, at least they were the last 5, so you'll never miss them!  To get this shot, I went out to the fire escape with tripod and gear.  I was out there for a bit, shooting away, not worried about anyone else coming out there because its the fire escape!  What I didn't know it the security guards in the building have to check the escape as part of their hourly sweep.  She opened the door, expected to see nothing but a nice view and continue on with her nightly tasks.  Instead, she opens the door, sees me in the darkness, with a tripod, light meter, camera bag, lenses, and other things laying around.  At that point, she decided that either a) I was a sniper about to take someone out or b) crazy stalker.

Either way, she decided the best way to react was to scream like a 5-year-old who just watched "The Best of Animal Vivisections!"... in High-Def. She was slightly upset. After convincing her that I was neither a killer or stalker, but instead a crazy photographer (which, I not sure was much higher on her list than stalker) she decided not to beat me with her "Officially Issued Security Beating Baton".  I thanked her, confirmed with her that, yes, a nice bottle or two of wine would be good when she gets home, and finally got a nice shot of the Bay Bridge heading into San Francisco.

As for the technical parts of this photo, here you go:
f/5.6 @ 2.5 seconds (via tripod) - 300mm (ISO 800)

Its a bit of a fuzzier picture than I had intentional wanted, but after looking at it for a while I kind of like that "haze" effect.  That's basically how SF looks most of the time anyways.

Enjoy!

Photo 365 - Day 29 (Kite Day 2)

Day 29 (August 1st, 2010)
Title: Kite Festival, Day 2

Today was the second day of the Berkeley Kite Festival and at first I was thinking, "I got pictures of the kites yesterday, so I don't need anymore today... "  But then I saw this GIANT squid kite, that was at least 3-4 times larger than the kites from yesterday.  They were still flying some of the "smaller" ones from yesterday.  They are on the left side for comparison.  This squid was massive!  It was also great to see so many people out there flying kites (if you look closely, you can see hundreds of people flying hordes of kites!)  I think next year, I might actually go down to the Berkeley Marina to get close-ups of the kites, rather than the "long-range" shots.  Also, if you look in the background you can see both the new and old Bay Bridge.
