89 Days - The Best "Worst" Grand Prix Ever

The Best "Worst" Grand Prix Ever

I recently returned from Grand Prix San Jose after 4 awesome days!  Two things happened at this Grand Prix that are polar opposites of each other, but together made for one of the most enjoyable Grand Prix's that I have ever attended.

Firstly, this was the worst that I have ever done at a Grand Prix.  The format was Team Limited; which is different from the normal Limited events that I normally play.  In a normal limited format, each player gets their own pool of cards and they play individually.  In Team Limited, you and two (awesometastic) friends join up to form a team and make decks/play with a combined pool of cards.  I joined with two friends who I was lucky enough to meet playing Magic a couple of years ago.  We practiced making decks, watched videos, reviewed cards, and basically felt we were ready to go!

One of the aspects that I enjoy so much about playing Limited-type games, is you receive a small (aka, "Limited") pool of random cards and that is all you get to build a deck with - and that's true for all of the player.  You don't need to spend a ton of money or have crazy-old cards to play.  In my opinion, it is the most balanced ways to play magic.  Now the thing about randomness is there will always be a curve, on average all of the card pools will be the same, but sometimes a group will open their pack of cards and get amazing cards that are all in sync and work perfectly together.  Other times you will get the cards that we opened.

During the main event of limited Grand Prix events, you are required to register your pool of cards, which basically means you have to write down all of the cards that you open so that there won't be any sort of cheating.  Once you open your cards and write all of the cards down, you pass those cards to someone else who actually gets to use those cards.  We were sitting at our table, opening our cards and writing down all of the cards that we had and were getting ready to pass them along.  While sitting there, we chatted with the other team across from us and they were joking around how bad the cards they opened were.  How all of the cards were weak and had no synergy.  We smiled and laughed along, because we all knew that when it comes to pass cards along, we normally pass 3-4 times.

The judges announced that each team pass the cards across the table.  We passed the pool we opened to the team and they passed us their cards.  We smiled, waiting for the judges to give the next pass order (such as "Pass right" or "Pass left").  The order came: "Okay everyone, that is your pool, begin deck construction".  The other team looked at us and we all saw the apologetic looks in their eyes.  They quietly began making their decks and would now-and-then sneak a peek back at us to see if we had started crying.

Our pool was just a total mess.  We were given time to make the decks and about halfway through we just started laughing.  At that point we knew decided we weren't going to worry about going 9-0, we were more worried about winning a single game!  My deck was so bad that it had an Old Maid, a 4 of diamonds, two "Wild, Draw 4" Uno cards, a business card from artist, my hotel room key, and a coupon from Subway for a free drink - lets just say not the best collection of things for a game of magic.

We made the best decks that we could and off we went!  And we were completely stomped.  A lot.  After three rounds, we somehow had a 0-2-1 result - and we were happy that we even had a draw!  It would have been loss, but we got lucky that time was called and somehow we held on just long enough to get the draw (I do want to apologize to the other team for that, we know it didn't help you guys out to get a draw, but for us that was a major accomplishment!)  After realizing that our only real chance of winning any of the future rounds was to have the other teams either all have brain embolisms or be hit by meteorites, we decided to drop out of the main event and instead go fight a lovely lunch!

After defeating a cheesesteak sandwich, we strolled back to the convention center and decided to do some team events.  I knew that we were prepared and certainly had the skills to play some team magic, but our results certainly had not shown that very well.  Staying upbeat, I got us queued up for a team draft, and to make a long(er) story, short - we kicked some butt!  We worked together and really supported each other and we ended with smiles and handfuls of prizes.

Secondly, other than the main event of the Grand Prix, I was playing some of the best magic that I have ever played.  My final results were 18-5-3 (not including main event), giving me a win percentage of 73%!  I won nearly 3.5 boxes, which was awesome!  I also got to play some of the top pros, and was even lucky enough to beat one.  I was also lucky to have played so many nice people over the 4 days (a couple "special" folk but nothing too bad).  Another bonus was having the fourth day - normally GPs are only three days - allowed me to meet and chat with quite a few of the artist (more on that in a later post).

Lots of magic, lots of good friends, one massive butt-kicking and handfuls of loot.  I guess I could have just posted that one sentence instead of all this craziness, but what fun would have that been!

Until next GP, have fun and enjoy the game!

Photo 365 - Day 214 (Sword of Jace)

Day 214 (February 2nd, 2011)
Title: Sword of Jace

Warning - High Gamer Level Post

This is for my fellow Magic: The Gathering fans.  I took some photos at my local store of a recent Magic event, and while I was more focused (photo pun!) on getting portraits of the players I did see a few matches that I thought "Wow, brutal!"  This is one of those matches, the player on the left has a Jace and Sword of Feast of Famine, while the player on the right... does not.

From a "photo" perspective, this is another selective color photo - I converted the entire photo to black and white, then masked Jace and the Sword back to color.

Enjoy

Photo 365 - Day 93 (Riffle Shuffle)

Day 93 (October 4th, 2010)
Title: Riffle Shuffle

I was lucky enough to be invited to a poker game last night and unlucky enough to be out 2nd.  Still, that gave me a lot of extra time to take photos!  I also had a great idea for next weeks photos (Ooo!  Foreboding!).  So, basically it was a $20.00 brainstorming night!  I did get lovely free "adult beverages", so I think that more than made up for it.

This particular photo is of a "riffle" shuffle, which is when you basically split the deck, then use your thumbs to just lift up on corner of each pile the cards and "riffle" them together.  Its also known as a "dealer shuffle", because it is the standard (and preferred) method of shuffling in a casino.  It takes practice and a good deck of cards, but once you get the hang of it you look all kinds of cool when you do it!

Techie bits:

100mm Macro lens
f/4.0 at 1/60th

I wish I could have gotten better lighting on it, but I tried with just the normal flash and it blew out all of the details, so I just went with the darker version so the feel of it would be better.

Enjoy!

Weekly Hindsight and Photo 365 - Day 30 (Parcheesi)

Day 30 (August 2nd, 2010)
Title: Parcheesi

Continuing with my Games subject-matter, our friends Amy and Luis brought over a classic game this weekend: Parcheesi!  Not only that, but it was an antique version that really had a LOT of character.  You can see more of the Parcheesi shots at my Flickr site.

Day 30!  I have made it a month!  When I started this project, I really thought that I might last 1-2 weeks and then it would slowly fade away.  I am pleasantly surprised to say it has done the opposite!  I am enjoying the project even more now than when I started!  There are certainly days that are tougher than others and sometimes I'll be sitting at the computer, looking at the clock blinking at me: 11:45pm and thinking, "I've got 15... plenty of time to shoot something.  Then edit it.  Then upload it.  Ahhh!!"  But, its on those days that I really try and stretch myself and not give up.  Even if I'm a tad late getting up the photo, I just do it!  I'm very proud that this week, I really tried to shoot different subject matter than my normal super-macro stuff... True, I kind of went to the extreme other end of the spectrum with super-telephoto shots, but at least I'm trying!

For anyone who is thinking about starting a Photo 365 project (or any Photo X project), here is some insight that I've picked up from my first 30 days:

1: Shoot every day!
2: Try mixing staged scenes with un-staged (re: "snapshots") to really stretch your skills/comfort level.
3: You don't need a big space to do staged photos.  Sometimes any flat surface will do!  In one setup I did, I just used a piece of white canvas draped over a lawn chair to make a pedestal.
4: Take pictures of everything!  Take pictures of things that you think are "common" (ex: making dinner, doing dishes, making coffee), but try and take the picture from different angles, use different lighting, try and get weird effects, anything!  Just shoot!
5: Shoot every day!  (Yeah, I know I this is a repeat, but its important!)

I'm looking forward to the next 30 days, and I hope that my work continues to improve!

My artsy tasks this week were mostly all completed, but with varied results.

1) For my weekly photoshop projects, I did complete all three, but my collage really needs work.  I think I'm starting to get the hang of layers - and yes, they are the most bestest thing ever!  I did do another selective color picture this week (Aces), and I really liked how it turned out!  I highly recommend trying it; it can turn a bland picture into something that "pops".

For this week, I'm doing another multi-layer project and going to try my hand at a HDR (High Dynamic Range) photo.

2) For the video I'm working on, I finally got the script/idea solidified and its progressing nicely.  I'm going to do some voice-over and sound effects work this week as well as some green-screen shots (first time - woo!)  I hope to post the video here (and just about everywhere else!) when I get it done and I would love feedback and comments!

3) For the website... I tried to do some updates/editing, but the webserver (AT&T... sigh) was being grumpy and would not let me upload my changes, so that's my project for THIS week: Find out why AT&T is so special.

4) Bonus Task: We purchased a sewing machine this weekend, for some other art projects, but I was playing with it and I had quite a bit of fun (lets just say, I can make a very near straight-ish line!).  I have a few small projects in mind, that while silly, I think will be fun.  I'll post my finished work here once I am done (and don't be surprised to see a macro-shot of a sewing machine sometime this week!)

Lastly, I want to thank those of you who have commented to me (either via email or in-person) on the work that I've been doing.  I do really appreciate all the comments and input that you have provided.

335 more to go!

Photo 365 - Day 17 (Craps)

Day 17 (July 20th, 2010)
Title: Craps Out

Craps is, without a doubt, my favorite game to play in Tahoe and Vegas.  Now, that doesn't mean that I'm good at it, its just my favorite.  I tried to over-saturate the colors just a bit to give it that "old Vegas" feel, like a 50's ad.

Photo 365 - Day 10 (Old Domino #2)

Day 10 (July 13th, 2010)
Title: Old Bone Domino's, Picture #2

I'm posting another domino picture because yesterday when I posted the first picture, I asked Theresa: "Do you know how to play dominoes?"  She replied: "Stack them up and knock them all down?"  This made me a bit sad, for that is not "playing" dominoes, that's "playing WITH dominoes".  To play dominoes, it a fun game of strategy, mathematics, and a smidgen of luck.

(Random Story Alert)

When I was a kid and I mean, KID (like 6-7), my dad used to play dominoes with my uncle and their friends in back of the house, in what was known as "dad's lair".  We kids weren't really allowed back there (lots of things we could have killed ourselves playing with), but there would be times when they were playing that my dad would let me back there just to watch... as long as I was quite and didn't touch anything.  I didn't.  I just watched them play for hours talking about sports, woodworking and whatnot.  Finally, one day my dad got up to go get more beer (ginger beer for me), he asked me to play his hand.  I was stunned and thrilled.  I took his seat with a sort of reverence.  Sort of like the captain of a ship giving the wheel to a lowly deck hand.  I gulped, shakily look at each 'bone' and waited my turn.  When it got to me, I carefully placed my bone and called out "fifteen".  The guys laughed and thought it was "cute" that I knew how to score.  About 5 min later, my dad returned, the hand was over and I had scored 50 points (which for a single round is pretty good).  After that, they would let me play (again, as long as I didn't talk and didn't touch anything... except the dominoes and to pass the bottle opener).  Dominoes was the first real "game" that I fell in love with, and although I've played many hundreds in the years since, it is also still my favorite.

(End Random Story Alert)

Well, Theresa reminded me that many people play with dominoes rather than realize that are for an actual game.  So, I thought: "what the heck!" and I took a picture for those poor souls who are missing out on the TRUE fun of those little tiles.  Enjoy!

Photo 365 - Day 9 (Old Domino #1)

Day 9 (July 12th, 2010)
Title: Old Bone Domino's, Picture #1

These are an antique set of bone and ebony dominoes that a friend got for me years ago.  They have been very well loved, but they are still amazing to hold and play with.  Although they are small, they are heavy and when you spin one, it really spins with enthusiasm!  I tried to keep this picture pretty large, so you can try and see the details of the domino more clearly (click on picture to see a larger version).

Photo 365 - Day 8 (Mah Jongg Tiles 1)

Day 8 (July 11th, 2010)
Title: Mah Jongg Tiles 1

I've started working on a project taking pictures of games and I thought I would begin with Mah Jongg, because its just cool!  I've posted a few other pictures of the Mah Jongg tiles to my flickr site, if you would like to view them (AntTree's Flickr Site).  Tomorrow I'll move to a new game!

The details are pretty nice, you might want to look at this one "full size" (just click on the pic to make it bigger).
