I named this "Black Hole", because when I saw it, the first thing I thought of was that the glass spheres looked like planets (or perhaps whole galaxies) being swallowed by a giant black hole. The red one is the first to go!

Photo 365 - Day 336 (Emergency)
Day 336 (June 4th, 2011)
Title: Emergency
It's been a bit of a long and mental exhausting week, and I'm afraid we are only half way through it. Recently a family member suffered a major medical condition, so we had to pack-up and move to Colorado for a little bit. I was able to quickly pack my small "point-and-shoot" camera and small laptop, so I'm certainly going to give it my best shot to complete my Project 365 by July 4th, but depending on how things go, it might be a bit late. I'm sure everyone understand that this project, was important and fun, has to take a back-seat (as with everything else) while this emergency is happening. Both Theresa and I want to thank those of you who've sent messages and good thoughts, and we hope things will become more stabilized soon.

Photo 365 - Day 314 (Boudin)

If your in San Francisco, and you brain tells you: "Gosh, I bet some clam chowder in a sour-dough bread-bowl would be lovely right now!", there's only one place to go: Boudins! Course, I would also recommend the fish and chip. And you can pick up an extra 40 pounds of sour dough to take home... you know, as souvenirs.

Photo 365 - Day 252 (Juicy Magma)
Day 252 (March 12th, 2011)
Title: Juicy Magma
Watermelon, while quite tasty, isn't very photogenic. I took about 200 photos of the melon before blending it into YumJuice (TM) (C), but many of the photos were just not that good - and because I'm a "professional" - I totally blame the watermelon. The external texture/coloring is nice, but nothing amazing (I have one more watermelon photo for tomorrow of the exterior skin), and the inside is basically red. Nothing really amazing about red. It's red. Not much to play with when all you have is just red. And I tried to get some photos with the seeds, thinking they would help with depth and contrast. I was wrong. Just red.
I finally got this photo of the "cross-section" of the melon and when I saw it, it reminded me of my old grade-school science books trying to describe the different layers of the Earth. When I saw this, I though: "Hey, science class would have been more fun with tasty fruit examples!"... So, the next time I teach kids about the Earth's crust and layers, this will be my fruit of choice!

True, it will probably be more than a weeks worth of pictures, but that's because we went crazy yesterday buying fruits and veggies so I thought it would be fun to shoot each fruit as we use it! First up, watermelon! This little guy got turned into crazy-good fresh watermelon juice!

Photo 365 - Day 221 (Purple Yarn)

Title: Purple Yarn
Continuing with yesterday's shot of the yarn flowers that our friend made for us, today's shot is actually identifiable as both yarn and a flower! This particular flower was about 1 to 1.5 inches wide and was very tightly woven (some of the other ones were a bit looser, giving the center a nifty hole and adding a bit of a pattern to the "petals").

Photo 365 - Day 220 (Yarn Tunnel)

Title: Yarn Tunnel
A friend of ours came over last week and while we were all sitting around chatting, she decided that she needed to scrap (that happens a lot when folks come over to our house - its basically a scrapbook store, but with more alcohol and better snacks). She decided to just make some cool flowers out of yarn and scrap fabric. I was thoroughly impressed, because a) they looked really neat and b) I end up in the emergency room requiring 230 stitches and needing 6 quarts of blood after just trying to thread the needle.
I've taken a few shots of the flowers, and this one is the first. Of course, being that I'm taking these pictures, the first one has to be an abstract that looks nothing like a flower, nor anything else really. I called it "Yarn Tunnel", because when I saw it, I joked: "Hey, this is the 'Tunnel of Light' that scrappers see when they die!"
And as it says in the Book of Tim (Holtz, that is), Psalm 11:24, "And lo, when thy scrap has end, thou shall see a great scrapping light, and a tunnel of perfectly spun yarn, and thou shalt KNOW thy is in a good place. A place of everlasting glue-pens and correctly shaped punches."

Secrets of Scrapbooking: Ribbon, Part 2
Yesterday I showed an example of how ribbon can be used to add color, texture and shine to your project. Today, I'm doing one more ribbon photo, to show how it can also add the element of depth. In this example, a thin red ribbon has been used twice, first as a flat element (again, adding color, texture and shine) as well as a folded bow to add more depth to the project. The bow (or any other 3D-shaped ribbon) adds even more shine than the flat ribbon, because it offers more surface area for light to reflect off it.
Who would have thought you could get so much impact out of just a small piece of ribbon!

Photo 365 - Day 147 (Tree Bridge)

Title: Tree Bridge
We were walking by the Legion of Honor in San Fran just shooting photos of the bridge when I noticed this one tree branch looked very similar to the bridge's design. I got a few shots, some with the branch in focus and some with the bridge in focus, but I thought the one with the tree in focus was a better composition because everyone knows the Golden Gate, even when it's blurry!

Photo 365 - Day 145 (Coffee Pod)

Title: Coffee Pod
Over a year ago, we bought this amazing little coffee machine called a Nespresso. Its basically a small jet engine that blast water through these little aluminum "pods" filled with coffee. Both the pods and machine are very European and have a "art-Deco" feel to them (smooth lines and curves, geometric shapes, etc). Now every time I make a cup of coffee, I feel all futuristic and snazzy. Ah, the power of caffeine!

(And yes, I know the machines are kinda expensive, but once you get one making a great cuppa only cost about $1.00)

Photo 365 - Day 143 (Bird Lift)

Alt title: Worlds Strongest Bird Competition.
We recently went to the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco, and outside in the parking lot there is this strange red/orange sculpture made of I-Beams. I saw some birds sitting on top of the structure, just relaxing, enjoying the view of the city, and suddenly one of them flew off. I just happened to catch the little guy right when he took off and was lucky enough to get a shot where one of his claws is still on the bar. With a little creative cropping and a bit of imagination it looks like, to me, that the bird is carrying that beam away. I can't imagine what kind of nest he is going to make, but I feel darn sorry for that tree!
