Photo 365 - Day 338 (Colorado Purple)
Day 338 (June 6th, 2011)
Title: Colorado Purple
One of the things that I do to help pass the time here in "lovely" (and by lovely, I mean scorching hot) Colorado, is walk around and take pictures of the random flowers and plants that I see. So, here is the first in a small collection of flowers that I've spied walking around Boulder Community Hospital.

Photo 365 - Day 221 (Purple Yarn)
Day 221 (February 9th, 2011)
Title: Purple Yarn
Continuing with yesterday's shot of the yarn flowers that our friend made for us, today's shot is actually identifiable as both yarn and a flower! This particular flower was about 1 to 1.5 inches wide and was very tightly woven (some of the other ones were a bit looser, giving the center a nifty hole and adding a bit of a pattern to the "petals").

Photo 365 - Day 220 (Yarn Tunnel)

Title: Yarn Tunnel
A friend of ours came over last week and while we were all sitting around chatting, she decided that she needed to scrap (that happens a lot when folks come over to our house - its basically a scrapbook store, but with more alcohol and better snacks). She decided to just make some cool flowers out of yarn and scrap fabric. I was thoroughly impressed, because a) they looked really neat and b) I end up in the emergency room requiring 230 stitches and needing 6 quarts of blood after just trying to thread the needle.
I've taken a few shots of the flowers, and this one is the first. Of course, being that I'm taking these pictures, the first one has to be an abstract that looks nothing like a flower, nor anything else really. I called it "Yarn Tunnel", because when I saw it, I joked: "Hey, this is the 'Tunnel of Light' that scrappers see when they die!"
And as it says in the Book of Tim (Holtz, that is), Psalm 11:24, "And lo, when thy scrap has end, thou shall see a great scrapping light, and a tunnel of perfectly spun yarn, and thou shalt KNOW thy is in a good place. A place of everlasting glue-pens and correctly shaped punches."

Photo 365 - Day 139 (Kissy Fish)

Title: Kissy Fish
This week I'm doing another "theme" week (not a Name That Thing - these photos will be easy to guess), mostly because its just the season for it. This week, I'm showing off some of the Christmas Tree ornaments that we have. Now, we have your standard "blinky lights", glass bulbs, and strange metal star like most folks, but we also have a few... unique items that I hope you'll enjoy!
This first one is named: Kissy Fish. It was a gift that I received many years ago and seriously thought about giving away as a "white elephant" gift. But after looking at it and laughing every time we saw it, we just knew we had to keep it.

Photo 365 - Day 119 (Sarlacc Bloom)

Title: Sarlacc Bloom
Okay, with this picture I truly show off my geekness meets artist! As soon as I saw this flower, the first thing that I thought of was the Sarlacc from Return of the Jedi (its the pit Jabba the Hutt is trying to toss Han and Luke into - that sadly eats Boba Fett). In the background (yes, my geek powers are so strong, I know some Star Wars background!), the Sarlacc grows from spores in space (Ooo, good name for a cover-band: Spores In Space!). I was thinking, what if before becoming some giant space worm/leech thingy that eats cool bad guys, that is started as some sort of flower. I'm thinking Star Wars meets Little Shop of Horrors.
"Feed me Darth Seymour!"

Photo 365 - Day 118 (Flower Whiskers)

Title: Flower Whiskers
I have no idea why I named this Flower Whiskers, only that when I see it, the first thing that I think of is "whisker stubble". I really like how this shot came out, although completely unplanned (of course). I enjoy the colors, from the deep purple to the light green; the short depth of field so that focal point is really small (and only a few of the 'whiskers' are in focus); and abstract-ness of the entire composition. I mean, you know its a flower as soon as you see it, but as you look at the individual parts, it's harder to see the overall picture.
I did lower the brightness and up the contrast a bit to give a little bit more definition in the separation of the colors. I also tweaked (slightly) the overall vibrance of the shot to bring out some of the more subtle purples.
I hope you like it!

Photo 365 - Day 109 (Linked Together)

Title: Linked Together
This is from a small necklace of Theresa's, that I thought just looked cool. It's not a very large or 'loud' piece of jewelery, but its got some great colors. All of the gemstones are muted (re: they don't have that 'Bedazzled' look), and the enamel painting uses a lot of dark, rich colors (like the green in the photo). The total non-chain portion is only a couple of inches long (perhaps 1/2 wide), but this close-up makes it look huge!
I've also starting using some different methods of shooting these pictures, and I'm hoping it comes out well. First, this is my first attempt at using RAW format (converted to JPG so I should share it here). For those photo-novices (which still includes me), RAW format basically means, the camera does not do any compression on the file when you take a picture - it just takes all of the data that the sensor collects, dumps it into a huge file and lets you "develop" the shot later on the computer. In theory, this is nice because it means you, as the photographer gets to select all the variables on how its compressed (compression is another way of saying: "make the picture file size smaller, but makes the quality of the picture worse"). Its more work, but you have much more control over what the final picture is going to look like as well as more options to fix "iffy" shots.
Its also the first time that I've used a background to shoot against. The "green" background I used because I thought it complimented the green color of the leaves, but at the same time gave it a nice "old" feel.
I'm sure I'll get better with both using RAW format and backgrounds in the future, but for my first attempt, I'd give myself a B-.

Photo 365 - Day 96 (Lemon Flower)
Day 96 (October 7th, 2010)
Title: Lemon Flower
Clearly Mabel enjoyed having her picture taken, because when I went out to check on her today, many of the buds (from yesterday) had bloomed into cute and very fragrant flowers! I would say nearly half of them bloomed and the other half are just about there! Now, being that I'm not a "green-thumb" (I have in fact, killed a bamboo plant... and it was plastic), I am hoping that all the buds, and now flowers, are a good sign for future lemoniness!
Course, knowing my luck, she is only growing all the flowers to attract the bees, whom she will then convince to all fly together and lift her up to freedom. She'll laugh: "You'll never see a lemon! Mu-hahaha!" as she flies off into the sunset. I blame the bee Unions for all of this.

We have a little lemon tree named Mabel, and she sits out on our balcony enjoying the sun and generally just being a tree. Now, Mabel is a pretty young tree and has so far only had one lemon. This year, since we moved, Mabel has been a bit moody and decided not to give us our annual lemon. I thought she was still mad at us for moving her away from her other tree friends, but when I walked out and watered her today, I noticed she was covered in little flower buds! Woo! Generally, flower buds mean more lemons! These buds are pretty small (1/4 of an inch at most), but I am still excited to see them! So excited in fact, that you get to see one too!
