Title: Black Hole
I named this "Black Hole", because when I saw it, the first thing I thought of was that the glass spheres looked like planets (or perhaps whole galaxies) being swallowed by a giant black hole. The red one is the first to go!

Photo 365 - Day 187 (Call Me Millard)

Title: Call Me Millard
Continuing with our "More Than I Really Needed To Know About Coins" lesson, we come to mints! Mints are tiny things that make your breath better... oh... wait, wrong mints. Mints buy a whole lot of metal (steel, copper, zinc, nickel, aluminum, etc), in huge rolls and run them into machines that punch out little "blanks" (basically its a 200 ton cookie cutter). They take the blanks, wash them and prep them and then line them up to be "smooshed" (that's a technical "coin" term) into coins. True, there's a bit more "technical" parts, but that's the Reader's Digest version.
In the US, there are 4 operational mints, the two largest (and well known because you carry their coins in your pocket) are Philadelphia and Denver. They make all of the circulated coins (coins that are made for public use). San Francisco makes special "Proof" sets that are for collectors (they are sealed in plastic containers so they stay in uncirculated condition). Lastly, is West Point, which only makes gold, silver and platinum coins for collectors.

Photo 365 - Day 186 (Evil Presidential Eye)

Title: Evil Presidential Eye
For those of you who were unaware, I am a coin person. I like coins, I collect coins, and I am even sick enough to go to coin shows. One of the things I really love about coins, are their history - nearly every nation uses their currency as a medium for displaying some aspect of their history (and culture). In the past, US coins were some of the most beautiful coins made, sadly, during the 1980s-1990s many of our coins lost their artistic elements and were just slabs of metal to most. But, in 1999 the US Mint decided to go all 'crazy' and started using coins as form of both art and history with the State Quarters program. Speaking on behalf of us 'coin folk', we were overjoyed. It made people look at their coins again, it brought younger folks into the world of collecting and helped start a trend in modern coinage that is still continuing - frequent changes to our coins, with new and better art.
One of the new series' that I am really excited about (really, I get actually excited about it - if you ever see me, just ask about it and I'll go all nuts explaining why the program is so great) is the Presidential Dollars program. In a nutshell, starting in 2007, every year the US Mint is going to release 4 new $1 "gold" coins, each with a different president, starting with good ole George Washington and going till Gerald Ford (they can't go past that, because Jimmy Carter is still alive - they have rules about putting art of living people on coins - basically, they won't). And it's not just a face, but it has when they were president as well. It's educational and fun!
These coins are available at any bank or from the US Mint's website. Buy them. Lots of them. They are nifty!
... except when Abraham Lincoln is starting at you... spooky!

Photo 365 - Day 145 (Coffee Pod)
Day 145 (November 24th, 2010)
Title: Coffee Pod
Over a year ago, we bought this amazing little coffee machine called a Nespresso. Its basically a small jet engine that blast water through these little aluminum "pods" filled with coffee. Both the pods and machine are very European and have a "art-Deco" feel to them (smooth lines and curves, geometric shapes, etc). Now every time I make a cup of coffee, I feel all futuristic and snazzy. Ah, the power of caffeine!

(And yes, I know the machines are kinda expensive, but once you get one making a great cuppa only cost about $1.00)

Photo 365 - Day 143 (Bird Lift)

Title: Bird Lift
Alt title: Worlds Strongest Bird Competition.
We recently went to the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco, and outside in the parking lot there is this strange red/orange sculpture made of I-Beams. I saw some birds sitting on top of the structure, just relaxing, enjoying the view of the city, and suddenly one of them flew off. I just happened to catch the little guy right when he took off and was lucky enough to get a shot where one of his claws is still on the bar. With a little creative cropping and a bit of imagination it looks like, to me, that the bird is carrying that beam away. I can't imagine what kind of nest he is going to make, but I feel darn sorry for that tree!

Photo 365 - Day 136 (Geek #5)

Title: Geek #5
Well, we are nearly to the end of the Name That Thing 2 adventure, and I have to say its been a lot of fun! Yesterday's photo certainly confused a few folks, but at the same time I think a lot more people got it right than I was expecting! I blame those darn Intel commercials! Yesterday's photo was of: CPU (Microprocessor) Chip! (AMD CPU in this case). The following answers were also deemed correct: "Computer's Brain!" and "Master Control Program Chip" (bonus Tron reference points were awarded!).
Congrats on all the correct guesses!
Today's picture is just mean. Its a Geek Level 5 photo, but the good news is its not the last of the photos - I have one more tomorrow that's really neat and not too hard to get! But today's is tricky. Its also a bit abstract, so that makes it a bit more difficult. But, I like the photo, so it gets a chance to trick you all! And if there was ever a shot that had a "Alien Probe"-esq look to it...

Welcome to Day 2 of Name That Thing 2! First, the important information; the answer to yesterdays photo! Yesterday's photo was... wait for it... a PS2 Plug! (Also acceptable answers: Mouse and/or Keyboard Plug). I'm proud to say, nearly everyone got that one (although: "Alien Probing Device" was certainly an interesting answer). For today, we are going to make it a little harder and dial it up to Geek Level 2!

Photo 365 - Day 105 (Steel Frog)
Day 105 (October 16th, 2010)
Title: Steel Frog
Score this one as another totally random thing I see that just screamed "take a picture of me!" This is a strange, but darn nifty, old hanging steel "thing". Perhaps it was a planter or wind chime at some point. But now, its just thing old frog-looking thing hanging on a spring. It makes little 'jumps' when the wind hits it and it seems like many generations of spiders have called it home (the cobwebs have cobwebs!). It has these old glass marbles for eyes and the green paint is chipping and faded. Even with all of those "character elements", it still called out to be photographed. And who am I to say no to a steel frog.

This (with the Iron Flamingo) are the two best scrap metal sculptures I've seen in a very long time. We very nearly got this chicken, before we realized: a) it was huge and wouldn't fit in the car, b) we have no where that would do this wonderful piece justice in our house. Perhaps he could have sat on the kitchen table...

Today was one of those days I just couldn't think of anything to photograph, so I just grabbed my camera and went looking for "nothing". I found this old valve and I thought it looked very photogenic. I'm not sure what it was for, but I hope nothing critical, because its not moving without a whole lot of help!
